サンフランシスコはノースビーチにある何の変哲もない建物の上階部分はコロンバス ・ホテルという名のレジデンシャル・ホテルだ。ドアを開けて階段を登れば、そこで は様々な背景を背負った人達の生活が繰り広げられている。「ここは単なる仮住まい だ。出ていこうと思えば何時でも出ていける」という思いを胸に抱き、また、口にし ながらも、何年にも渡ってこのホテルで生活をしている人達。自称アーティストの路 上の物売り女、引き蘢りの元ミュージシャン、市内のスープ・キッチンを廻って日々 を過ごすゲイの老人、共産主義者の詩人…家を背負って移動するヤドカリを彷佛させ る住人達と彼らの部屋、その中に詰まっている彼らの所有物。モノ達は持ち主の物語 を強烈に発していた。私はその物語を読むこと、そして、フィルムに定着させること に夢中になっていた。――藤部明子

In North Beach, San Francisco, there is a featureless four-story white building on Columbus Avenue. The upper floors of this building is a residential hotel called the Columbus Hotel. I took photographs there, and it became the subject of this book. Open the door and go upstairs. There you see the vibrant lives of various people with unexpected backgrounds.
Urban not-quite-nomads, these folks keep telling themselves: This is just temporary, I can go out any time I want. And yet they live in the hotel for years on end. A street-vender woman who calls herself an artist, a withdrawn ex-musician, an old gay man who spends his days from one soup kitchen to another, a hard-core communist poet.... Dispossessed souls wandering in search of a shelter with all their worldly possessions on their backs. The objects that filled their rooms whispered intensely of their lives elsewhere. And there I was, madly trying to read them all, to capture their untold stories on a film.
